What is Tatouage?

Tatouage (pronounced tatoo-aaage) will transform your house into a unique work of art!  Ideas with Tatouage are limitless!

Our designs are high resolution dry rub transfers that can be applied to just about any hard surface. There is no paint, no glue, no water, no fumes and no mess. You simply decide where you want to apply the transfer, cut out the design, remove the protective backing, place the transfer down color side up, rub the design with the applicator stick, and peel the transfer back slowly. It's truly that easy!

Tatouage is a high resolution dry rub on transfer.  It can be applied to any hard surface!   (Trash cans, dressers, jewelry boxes, headboards, mirrors, walls, floors, tile, and so much more!)  Tatouage will have the appearance and feel of painted walls when complete.  You will not be able to “feel” where the Tatouage and the other areas of your walls or surface meet.  When it is time for you to change your theme, just paint over it.

Preparing Your Walls/Surfaces

Make sure your wall/surface is clean and dry. If you are applying the transfer to a surface that is painted with any kind of gloss, we recommend you wash down your walls with a vinegar and water mix (60% water/40% vinegar). This will not take off your paint; it will help the Transfer adhere easily.

Other options that work on gloss paint are lightly sanding the surface with light grain sandpaper (make sure you wash down your walls again to remove the residue) or using rubbing alcohol on the surface.

Before You Begin

Make sure you keep the protective sheet on the back of your transfer until you are ready to apply it to your wall or surface. The transfer is very sticky and will stick to everything it touches.

Plan out your design ahead of time by laying it on a bed or floor. If you are doing an entire wall mural, take the time to measure out the center of the space so your mural will look as planned.

After you are finished with your mural, decide whether or not you need to seal it. We recommend a clear water based acrylic spray for wall and tile décor, and clear water based polyurethane if you are applying to a wood or laminate surface. Polyurethane will yellow your wall/painted surface. If your paint is gloss, choose a gloss spray. If your paint is matte, use a matte spray. This will preserve your designs for many years to come. Sealing your design is also recommended if you intend to clean it frequently (in a child's room, bathroom, kitchen splash or main walk way).

You will quickly become an expert at applying our transfers on walls and other surfaces and agree that it requires no artistic ability at all. To help you make your results even more beautiful, we have put together a list of tips and hints we know you will find useful.
With Tatouage, just tape the artwork in place and simply rub the design along almost any surface. No major power tools, messy paints or sticky adhesives are needed to create this stunning art. Unlike stenciling or painting directly onto your walls and other surfaces, Tatouage won't take hours of frustration to complete.

Helpful Hints

Please scroll down below to find the designs you are working with for more help:
Faux Stone, Urn, Picket Fence & Columns – If you are working with these designs, place them down first. You can always use other components to give the look that the design is coming out from behind without wasting product. These are bigger designs and they will take longer to put up. Start from the middle of the design and work your way out. Make sure to hold down the sheet as you are rubbing so you won't crack the design if it moves. If using the columns, we recommend that you start from the bottom and work your way up so you can control the height of your column.

Iron Fence - 4 Sheets $24.99Wrought Iron Scroll/Fence – Use your imagination on these designs. For the “Scroll”, we give you a suggested layout, however you can customize this to your own space. You can use all the pieces or just a few. You can purchase additional designs to make it thicker, or use just one to make it thin.

You can either put this all up first or put up some vines, ivy or morning glories first to give it a look as if it is behind the ‘Scroll' or ‘Fence.' Another option is to put up some vines, ivy or morning glories and then put up the ‘Scroll' or ‘Fence' and then add some greenery to it to give the look that it is meandering in and out of the wrought iron.

When using the fence, start from the center point of your wall and move outward so your design is evenly centered in the space you are decorating. Make sure you don't put too much or two little space between. Use your connectors that come with the fence to measure how far apart the designs should be (just be careful to keep the backing on if you are only measuring).

Tropical Fish $27.99Under the Sea – Put up some of the ‘Seagrass' and then start adding ‘Fish' and ‘Seashells.' When you are half-way done, add more ‘Seagrass' over some of the Fish and Seashells, this will give the look that some of the ‘Fish' and ‘Shells' are between the ‘Seagrass,' and will give your mural a realistic look. You can apply the ‘Fish' in schools or have them swimming freely…the choice is yours!

Climbing Vines Border - 32 Feet $39.99Vines/Ivy/Morning Glories/Rose Vines – These designs are the most universal and can be mixed and matched with just about any design our portfolio. All of the designs, with the exception of the Ivy have indications where you can cut the design to make it work for your space. If you have the Ivy, you are in luck because it is already cut for you! If you would like the look of a border, simply place the designs end to end along your wall. If you are decorating your space as a mural or accenting a picture or doorway, the best thing to do is cut up all your sheet with the exception of one where indicated. Use the vines to go in and around a doorway, a picture, a window, or what ever your case may be. You do not need to have one consecutive vine. Be creative and have the design look as if it is going behind your other transfer, picture, window, or doorway. Use the last sheet of the transfer to cut where you like. You will find you need a little piece here and there. By this time you are getting used to the designs and you should have no trouble figuring out where your last pieces should go.

Remember, vines in nature do not grow symmetrically; they are free flowing and should be free flowing as well in your mural. This is the reason we do not make the vine sheet transposed.

Flowers on the Vines – If you would like to add flowers to your vines, we make these few suggestions:

  • Blue Blossoms - 2 Sheets $19.99Flowering Blossoms (Pink, Yellow & Peach) – Place these flowers near a leaf as if it is growing out of the leaf. Don't apply to the end of the tendril, or in the middle of a blank stem, as this is not a logical place a blossom would grow.
  • Flowering Jasmine (Blue & Lavender) – Place these in the center of the stem where there are not leaves on the vine. These flowers come with their own leaves. You will find that these flowers will give your mural a thicker look, with a very delicate looking flower.
  • Ivy - One small note to make with the Ivy is that flowers do not grow on Ivy.
